Situated in Westcliffe, Our
Lady of the Assumption Church serves the Wet Mountain Valley inclusive of
Cotopaxi, Texas Creek, and Gardner. It is a rural parish with an economy based
on cattle ranching and agriculture.
Silver, discovered in 1879,
in the cliffs surrounding the area attracted a colorful assortment of characters
bent on mining their fortunes. Today the craze for silver and instant wealth is
no longer an aspect of the sleepy community, which is content with the wealth of
beauty found freely in the surrounding Wet Mountains.
Our
Lady of Assumption parish, which has been serving area Catholics for over 100
years, is cared for by the monks of Holy Cross Abbey in Caņon City.
