HISTORY |

Walsenburg is a rural area,
near the base of the Spanish Peaks. The current population is estimated at
4,000, with Roman Catholics making up over two-thirds of that. The principal
employers of the town are the school district, the regional hospital and the
county correctional facility. Tourism abounds due to the close proximity of the
mountains.
In the early part of the 20th
century, the coal mining industry permeated the locale. But due to
inefficiencies in techniques and resources elsewhere, the industry left most of
the mines, which created a serious economic depression. The area is still
suffering the effects of this process. Today the parish serves a congregation of
800 families.
