Our Lady of Mount Carmel

HISTORY

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church is nestled at the foothills of the Spanish Peaks, in the northwestern part of Las Animas County.

In 1875, the small house that had originally served as a chapel had to be replaced. The new chapel was built by those who donated their skills of carpentry and adobe making, as well as money, goods and land. Work was completed within two years, and with the prayers and wishes of the faithful women, the Carmelitas, the chapel was dedicated to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.

From 1860 until 1900, mass was celebrated once a month at this mission, with the priest traveling from Trinidad, and later from Aguilar. Since 1983, mass is only celebrated on the Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. The good people gather for mass and benediction, afterwards they form a procession outside the church to sing and pray the Rosary. Later everyone enjoys a potluck dinner.
