St. Leander’s Parish and Our Lady of Guadalupe are
located on the eastside of Pueblo, in an older residential area. There are a
good deal of elderly parishioners who have remained members of the parishes for
many years, and have raised families in the parishes.
St. Leander’s Parish was established on October 3,
1903, with the dedication of a Benedictine College Chapel that stood on what is
now Risley Middle School. In 1914, the block east of the Chapel was purchased
and a fine brick school was built; it still serves the parish. By 1925, the
congregation had outgrown the chapel. In the fall of that year, the cornerstone
of the present St. Leander was laid, and the first mass was celebrated in the
structure on Easter, 1926.
The Benedictine Community served the parish from its
inception until 1973, when the Claretian Community arrived. In 1982, Diocesan
priests were assigned to St. Leander and still remain.
