Christ the King is
an urban parish that serves the Belmont, University Park, University Hills and
Walking Stick neighborhoods of northeast Pueblo. Demographically, the parish is
made up of a diverse group of working professionals, young families, retirees
and students.
Christ the King
was formed by decree of Bishop Joseph Willging on July 20, 1956 to serve the
fledgling Belmont suburb. (The parish was an offshoot of St. Leander). In the
year it took to construct the church, the congregation celebrated mass at the
old Eden Schoolhouse on Overton Road.
No time was wasted
building the new church, and by Palm Sunday, 1957, Christ the King Church was
ready to celebrate its first Mass. The church, which was able to seat 460
people, was dedicated in October 1957.
In 1964 the
Catholic Elementary School on the property was dedicated. However, in 1971 it
was closed. The facility now houses the Christ the King Formation Center where
Religious Education is held on Sundays. The facility also houses Adult
Enrichment classes throughout the year.
In the late 1980’s, parish
leadership and council envisioned a way in which their mission statement of
Word, Worship and Witness would become a reality. During this period, the
kitchen, the parish hall, and the Church Sanctuary were renovated. In 2003, the
addition of a Gathering Space, Narthex and stained glass windows completed the
Church structure. Come and see their beautiful stained glass windows.
