HISTORY
St. Edward’s Church was the first Catholic Church in Pagosa Springs. It was organized and built in 1893. At that time the parish priest would come form Conejos or San Luis. The Theatine Fathers came to Durango in 1906, and after their arrival they served Pagosa Springs and the outlying mission churches in Archuleta County.

The current church was dedicated as the Immaculate Heart of Mary by Bishop Joseph Willging on May 22, 1949. The church was designated a mission of Sacred Heart in Durango. Once a month, the priest would commute to Pagosa Springs to celebrate mass. In 1951, the church became a parish with a resident priest. Disaster struck in 1960 when the parish hall was destroyed by fire, but the congregation joined forces and a new hall was completed by the next year.
