| Gardner is a tiny, rural town nested on the Front
Range of southern Colorado. Residents here are primarily ranchers or farmers.
The church of Sacred Heart is said to have built
after 200 wagons loaded with beams and boards from the Sangre de Cristo
Mountains arrived in Gardner. Construction of the church was directed by Fr.
Louis Pecorella. In later years, a school, convent and rectory were added to the
parish plant
By
1966, the population of Gardner was not sufficient enough to demand a resident
pastor. Since then, the parish has been designated as a parish without a
resident priest. The main challenge for Sacred Heart has been, and will be, to
continue functioning as a Catholic community with the limited presence of a
clergy member and a small number of parishioners. The congregation numbers
approximately thirty.
