Do you know a young, faith-filled Catholic (ages 18-30) who is actively engaged in changing unjust structures that keep people trapped in the cycle of poverty?  Nominate him or her for the 2008 Cardinal Bernardin New Leadership Award, a program of the USCCB/Catholic Campaign for Human Development.  Winners over the past several years have included David Golemboski (2007), honored for his work to help affluent and low-income youth “cross borders” and interact with one another through a retreat program in Louisville, KY; Jamila Spencer (2006), recognized for her work in community organizing and immigration reform in Denver, CO; and Rafael Duran (2005), celebrated for his role as co-founder of Restaurant Opportunities Center of New York (ROC-NY), an organization that champions justice for restaurant workers.

The award recipient will receive a $1000 cash award and be honored at a reception held in conjunction with the November annual meeting of the US Catholic Bishops in Baltimore, MD.

Nominations are due to the CCHD national office no later than July 31, 2008. Nomination forms can be downloaded from: http://www.usccb.org/cchd/youth.shtml or requested via email: jrauh@usccb.org or telephone: 202-541-3297.

CCHD is the U.S. Catholic Church’s response to poverty in America. The Campaign puts the gospel and our Catholic social teachings into action by supporting self-help, low-income, community-based projects and through transformative education.  In 2007, CCHD invested over $9 million in 340 community-based projects across the country.
