The
small town of Romeo dates to 1901. During the early part of the century Romeo
was a busy place, with stockyards, a potato exchange and vegetable packing
sheds. Situated on the north-south rail line, it served as both a shipping point
and a supply center for nearby ranchers and for the larger town of Manassa to
the east. Now the town’s population has dwindled to about four hundred, with a
few businesses and a post office still lining Main Street.
The
town's Catholic church, a small adobe structure dedicated to Mary under the
title of Immaculate Conception, was build in 1912, and dedicated on Assumption
Day of the same year. For a period of time in the early 1990s, the church
was unused. Windows were vandalized and boarded up. Then in 1996,
the church was reopened for weekly mass and other gatherings. In 1999, the
feast of the Assumption was once again celebrated with a festive liturgy,
procession and dinner in the town's community center.
