History:

St. Joseph’s Church is located in the southern part of the San Luis Valley and includes some of the best farmland in the state, as well as some of the finest grassland. The eastern boundary of the parish is the Rio Grande River; the western boundary is the Continental Divide. This is all high country, with elevations that run between 7,546 to 13,190 feet. Six small communities, (Sanford, Capulin, Los Sauces, Romero, La Jara and Manassa), range in congregation size of a few families to parishes with a thousand people. These communities are served by St. Joseph, and its missions: Our Lady of the Valley, La Jara; St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, Manassa; the Immaculate Conception, Romeo; and San Antonio in Los Sauces.

The village of Capulin was established in 1867 and named for the chokecherry bushes that are abundant in the area. It was a supply point and market place for farmers and ranchers along the Alamosa River and La Jara Creek, as well as the gateway to the mines farther in the west.

The first small church was built of adobe bricks in 1878. At that time it was a mission of the first parish in the state, Our Lady of Guadalupe, in Conejos, and was served by the Jesuit priests. Construction on the current church began in 1912 and continued for the next four years. The church is built of native stone, quarried several miles from the site and hauled to it by men with teams of horses. The wagons rolled the entire summer of 1912 until the walls were erected.

In 1939, St. Joseph Church became a separate parish serving the northern half of Conejos County. At that time, the Theatine priests served the parish. Beginning in the early forties, the Benedictine Sisters taught in the local public school for many years. They helped to maintain a strong education system for grade school as well as high school students. The school closed in 1992, but the building continues to be used as a community center.

The church remains the heart of the parish. The administrative offices are located in Capulin and masses are celebrated each Sunday as well as on weekdays. Special prayer events and feasts, including the Good Friday Pilgrimage, bring all in the Catholic community together to worship in unity and brotherhood.

The following responses apply to St. Joseph and all its missions. They are one parish with one mission statement, one Parish Council, one united effort to be the Catholic-Christian presence in northern Conejos County.
